De Stinson Reliant SR-10 van Parkzone

Terug in de tijd, terug naar de gouden periode van de luchtvaart; de jaren dertig. Een periode die bol stond van nieuwe en soms eigenzinnige ontwikkelingen in de vliegtuigbouw. Vele modellen werden ontworpen, maar slechts enkelen hadden succes. De Stinson Reliant was een van de succesvolle ontwerpen van Edward ‘’Eddie” Stinson dat nog steeds tot de verbeelding spreekt. Zijn eerste commercieel succes uit 1933 was de SR-1, waarna via diverse modificaties de SR-10 ontstond.

De Stinson Reliant is een eenmotorige hoogdekker met een karakteristieke vleugelvorm, de zogenaamde “Gullwing’’ of meeuwenvleugel. Het werd aangedreven door een negen cilinder radiaal motor, de Lycoming R-680. Tot 1943 werden er door de Aviation Manufactoring Corporation in Wayne Michigan in de Verenigde Staten van Amerika 1327 stuks in verschillende types, aangeduid met SR-1 t/m SR-10 gebouwd. De SR-10 werd in de tweede wereldoorlog gebruikt door de US-Army als vliegtuig voor algemeen gebruik en werd aangeduid met UC-81 en als trainer met  AT-19. Deze uitvoering werd ook gebruikt door de Engelse luchtmacht. De overtollige toestellen werden na het beëindigen van de oorlog in een gemodificeerde vorm verkocht voor civiel gebruik onder de naam Vultee-77. Het had dan vier of vijf zitplaatsen.

Nee, dit artikel gaat niet over een model van triplex en perkament of linnen bespanning maar over een RTF-model, de Stinson SR-10 van Parkzone, vervaardigd van hoogwaardig gemodificeerd polystyreen, aangeduid als ‘’Z-foam™’’?  Wat het dan ook precies mag zijn, de fabrikant zal het niet prijsgeven maar het is dus bijzonder geschikt om er mooie modelvliegtuigen van te maken.

The Stinson Reliant SR-10 "Gullwing") is a four-to-five seat commercial monoplane which is the brainchild of E.A. "Eddie" Stinson, and was designed for private operators and small charter companies. It was regarded as a strikingly handsome airplane for its ease in handling and its ability to carry four to five people in comfort. The Reliant could recover from a stall and return to level flight "hands off". These features along with state of the art navigation and communication radios, made it popular with executive charter services as well as with the more sophisticated, wealthy buyer. The Reliant was also used in 1939 to test a unique airmail service for communities that did not have landing fields. Mail was loaded into a container which was then placed on top of a contraption resembling a goal post. As the pilot guided the airplane down, the flight officer held a grappling hook to snag the container. Mail destined for the community was then dropped from the plane onto the airfield.
